  15. settings.yml location
  16. =====================
  17. The initial ``settings.yml`` we be load from these locations:
  18. 1. the full path specified in the ``SEARX_SETTINGS_PATH`` environment variable.
  19. 2. ``/etc/searx/settings.yml``
  20. If these files don't exist (or are empty or can't be read), searx uses the
  21. :origin:`searx/settings.yml` file. Read :ref:`settings use_default_settings` to
  22. see how you can simplify your *user defined* ``settings.yml``.

  41. ``debug`` :
  42. Allow a more detailed log if you run searx directly. Display *detailed* error
  43. messages in the browser too, so this must be deactivated in production.
  44. ``contact_url``:
  45. Contact ``mailto:`` address or WEB form.
  46. ``git_url`` and ``git_branch``:
  47. Changes this, to point to your searx fork (branch).

  68. X-Download-Options : noopen
  69. X-Robots-Tag : noindex, nofollow
  70. Referrer-Policy : no-referrer
  71. ``port`` & ``bind_address``:
  72. Port number and *bind address* of the searx web application if you run it
  73. directly using ``python searx/webapp.py``. Doesn't apply to searx running on
  74. Apache or Nginx.
  75. ``secret_key`` :
  76. Used for cryptography purpose.
  77. ``base_url`` :
  78. The base URL where searx is deployed. Used to create correct inbound links.
  79. ``image_proxy`` :
  80. Allow your instance of searx of being able to proxy images. Uses memory space.
  81. ``default_locale`` :
  82. Searx interface language. If blank, the locale is detected by using the
  83. browser language. If it doesn't work, or you are deploying a language
  84. specific instance of searx, a locale can be defined using an ISO language
  85. code, like ``fr``, ``en``, ``de``.
  86. ``default_theme`` :
  87. Name of the theme you want to use by default on your searx instance.
  88. .. _HTTP headers: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Headers
  89. ``default_http_headers``:
  90. Set additional HTTP headers, see `#755 <https://github.com/searx/searx/issues/715>`__
  91. ``outgoing:``
  92. -------------
  93. Communication with search engines.
  94. .. code:: yaml
  95. outgoing:
  96. request_timeout: 2.0 # default timeout in seconds, can be override by engine
  97. max_request_timeout: 10.0 # the maximum timeout in seconds
  98. useragent_suffix: "" # informations like an email address to the administrator
  99. pool_connections: 100 # Maximum number of allowable connections, or null
  100. # for no limits. The default is 100.
  101. pool_maxsize: 10 # Number of allowable keep-alive connections, or null
  102. # to always allow. The default is 10.
  103. enable_http2: true # See https://www.python-httpx.org/http2/
  104. # uncomment below section if you want to use a proxy
  105. # proxies:
  106. # all://:
  107. # - http://proxy1:8080
  108. # - http://proxy2:8080
  109. # uncomment below section only if you have more than one network interface
  110. # which can be the source of outgoing search requests
  111. # source_ips:
  112. # - 1.1.1.1
  113. # - 1.1.1.2
  114. # - fe80::/126
  115. ``request_timeout`` :
  116. Global timeout of the requests made to others engines in seconds. A bigger
  117. timeout will allow to wait for answers from slow engines, but in consequence
  118. will slow searx reactivity (the result page may take the time specified in the
  119. timeout to load). Can be override by :ref:`settings engine`
  120. ``useragent_suffix`` :
  121. Suffix to the user-agent searx uses to send requests to others engines. If an
  122. engine wish to block you, a contact info here may be useful to avoid that.
  123. ``keepalive_expiry``:
  124. Number of seconds to keep a connection in the pool. By default 5.0 seconds.
  125. .. _httpx proxies: https://www.python-httpx.org/advanced/#http-proxying
  126. ``proxies`` :
  127. Define one or more proxies you wish to use, see `httpx proxies`_.
  128. If there are more than one proxy for one protocol (http, https),
  129. requests to the engines are distributed in a round-robin fashion.
  130. ``source_ips`` :
  131. If you use multiple network interfaces, define from which IP the requests must
  132. be made. Example:
  133. * ``0.0.0.0`` any local IPv4 address.
  134. * ``::`` any local IPv6 address.
  135. * ``192.168.0.1``
  136. * ``[ 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2 ]`` these two specific IP addresses
  137. * ``fe80::60a2:1691:e5a2:ee1f``
  138. * ``fe80::60a2:1691:e5a2:ee1f/126`` all IP addresses in this network.
  139. * ``[ 192.168.0.1, fe80::/126 ]``
  140. ``retries`` :
  141. Number of retry in case of an HTTP error. On each retry, searx uses an
  142. different proxy and source ip.
  143. ``retry_on_http_error`` :
  144. Retry request on some HTTP status code.
  145. Example:
  146. * ``true`` : on HTTP status code between 400 and 599.
  147. * ``403`` : on HTTP status code 403.
  148. * ``[403, 429]``: on HTTP status code 403 and 429.
  149. ``enable_http2`` :
  150. Enable by default. Set to ``false`` to disable HTTP/2.
  151. ``max_redirects`` :
  152. 30 by default. Maximum redirect before it is an error.
  153. ``locales:``
  154. ------------
  155. .. code:: yaml
  156. locales:
  157. en: English
  158. de: Deutsch
  159. he: Hebrew
  160. hu: Magyar
  161. fr: Français
  162. es: Español
  163. it: Italiano
  164. nl: Nederlands
  165. ja: 日本語 (Japanese)
  166. tr: Türkçe
  167. ru: Russian
  168. ro: Romanian
  169. ``locales`` :
  170. Locales codes and their names. Available translations of searx interface.

  214. - socks5h://user:password@proxy4:1080
  215. ``name`` :
  216. Name that will be used across searx to define this engine. In settings, on
  217. the result page...
  218. ``engine`` :
  219. Name of the python file used to handle requests and responses to and from this
  220. search engine.
  221. ``shortcut`` :
  222. Code used to execute bang requests (in this case using ``!bi`` or ``?bi``)
  223. ``base_url`` : optional
  224. Part of the URL that should be stable across every request. Can be useful to
  225. use multiple sites using only one engine, or updating the site URL without
  226. touching at the code.
  227. ``categories`` : optional
  228. Define in which categories this engine will be active. Most of the time, it is
  229. defined in the code of the engine, but in a few cases it is useful, like when
  230. describing multiple search engine using the same code.
  231. ``timeout`` : optional
  232. Timeout of the search with the current search engine. **Be careful, it will
  233. modify the global timeout of searx.**
  234. ``api_key`` : optional
  235. In a few cases, using an API needs the use of a secret key. How to obtain them
  236. is described in the file.
  237. ``disabled`` : optional
  238. To disable by default the engine, but not deleting it. It will allow the user
  239. to manually activate it in the settings.
  240. ``language`` : optional
  241. If you want to use another language for a specific engine, you can define it
  242. by using the full ISO code of language and country, like ``fr_FR``, ``en_US``,
  243. ``de_DE``.
  244. ``tokens`` : optional
  245. A list of secret tokens to make this engine *private*, more details see
  246. :ref:`private engines`.
  247. ``weigth`` : default ``1``
  248. Weighting of the results of this engine.
  249. ``display_error_messages`` : default ``true``
  250. When an engine returns an error, the message is displayed on the user interface.
  251. ``network``: optional
  252. Use the network configuration from another engine.
  253. In addition, there are two default networks:
  254. * ``ipv4`` set ``local_addresses`` to ``0.0.0.0`` (use only IPv4 local addresses)
  255. * ``ipv6`` set ``local_addresses`` to ``::`` (use only IPv6 local addresses)
  256. .. note::
  257. A few more options are possible, but they are pretty specific to some
  258. engines, and so won't be described here.
  259. .. _settings use_default_settings:
  260. use_default_settings
  261. ====================
  262. .. sidebar:: ``use_default_settings: true``
  263. - :ref:`settings location`
  264. - :ref:`use_default_settings.yml`
  265. - :origin:`/etc/searx/settings.yml <utils/templates/etc/searx/use_default_settings.yml>`
  266. The user defined ``settings.yml`` is loaded from the :ref:`settings location`
  267. and can relied on the default configuration :origin:`searx/settings.yml` using:
  268. ``use_default_settings: true``
  269. ``server:``
  270. In the following example, the actual settings are the default settings defined
  271. in :origin:`searx/settings.yml` with the exception of the ``secret_key`` and
  272. the ``bind_address``:
  273. .. code-block:: yaml
  274. use_default_settings: true
  275. server:
  276. secret_key: "ultrasecretkey" # change this!
  277. bind_address: "0.0.0.0"
  278. ``engines:``
  279. With ``use_default_settings: true``, each settings can be override in a
  280. similar way, the ``engines`` section is merged according to the engine
  281. ``name``. In this example, searx will load all the engine and the arch linux
  282. wiki engine has a :ref:`token <private engines>`:
  283. .. code-block:: yaml
  284. use_default_settings: true
  285. server:
  286. secret_key: "ultrasecretkey" # change this!
  287. engines:
  288. - name: arch linux wiki
  289. tokens: ['$ecretValue']
  290. ``engines:`` / ``remove:``
  291. It is possible to remove some engines from the default settings. The following
  292. example is similar to the above one, but searx doesn't load the the google
  293. engine:
  294. .. code-block:: yaml
  295. use_default_settings:
  296. engines:
  297. remove:
  298. - google
  299. server:
  300. secret_key: "ultrasecretkey" # change this!
  301. engines:
  302. - name: arch linux wiki
  303. tokens: ['$ecretValue']
  304. ``engines:`` / ``keep_only:``
  305. As an alternative, it is possible to specify the engines to keep. In the
  306. following example, searx has only two engines:
  307. .. code-block:: yaml
  308. use_default_settings:
  309. engines:
  310. keep_only:
  311. - google
  312. - duckduckgo
  313. server:
  314. secret_key: "ultrasecretkey" # change this!
  315. engines:
  316. - name: google
  317. tokens: ['$ecretValue']
  318. - name: duckduckgo
  319. tokens: ['$ecretValue']
