  16. =====================
  17. The initial ``settings.yml`` we be load from these locations:
  18. 1. the full path specified in the ``SEARX_SETTINGS_PATH`` environment variable.
  19. 2. ``/etc/searx/settings.yml``
  20. If these files don't exist (or are empty or can't be read), searx uses the

  41. ``debug`` :
  42. Allow a more detailed log if you run searx directly. Display *detailed* error
  43. messages in the browser too, so this must be deactivated in production.
  44. ``contact_url``:
  45. Contact ``mailto:`` address or WEB form.
  46. ``git_url`` and ``git_branch``:
  47. Changes this, to point to your searx fork (branch).
  48. ``docs_url``
  49. If you host your own documentation, change this URL.
  50. ``wiki_url``:

  66. X-Download-Options : noopen
  67. X-Robots-Tag : noindex, nofollow
  68. Referrer-Policy : no-referrer
  69. ``port`` & ``bind_address``:
  70. Port number and *bind address* of the searx web application if you run it
  71. directly using ``python searx/webapp.py``. Doesn't apply to searx running on
  72. Apache or Nginx.
  73. ``secret_key`` :
  74. Used for cryptography purpose.
  75. ``base_url`` :
  76. The base URL where searx is deployed. Used to create correct inbound links.
  77. ``image_proxy`` :
  78. Allow your instance of searx of being able to proxy images. Uses memory space.
  79. ``default_locale`` :
  80. Searx interface language. If blank, the locale is detected by using the
  81. browser language. If it doesn't work, or you are deploying a language
  82. specific instance of searx, a locale can be defined using an ISO language
  83. code, like ``fr``, ``en``, ``de``.
  84. ``default_theme`` :
  85. Name of the theme you want to use by default on your searx instance.
  86. .. _HTTP headers: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Headers
  87. ``default_http_headers``:
  88. Set additional HTTP headers, see `#755 <https://github.com/searx/searx/issues/715>`__
  89. ``outgoing:``
  90. -------------
  91. Communication with search engines.
  92. .. code:: yaml
  93. outgoing:
  94. request_timeout: 2.0 # default timeout in seconds, can be override by engine
  95. max_request_timeout: 10.0 # the maximum timeout in seconds
  96. useragent_suffix: "" # informations like an email address to the administrator
  97. pool_connections: 100 # Maximum number of allowable connections, or null
  98. # for no limits. The default is 100.
  99. pool_maxsize: 10 # Number of allowable keep-alive connections, or null
  100. # to always allow. The default is 10.
  101. enable_http2: true # See https://www.python-httpx.org/http2/
  102. # uncomment below section if you want to use a proxy
  103. # proxies:
  104. # all://:
  105. # - http://proxy1:8080
  106. # - http://proxy2:8080
  107. # uncomment below section only if you have more than one network interface
  108. # which can be the source of outgoing search requests
  109. # source_ips:
  110. # - 1.1.1.1
  111. # - 1.1.1.2
  112. # - fe80::/126
  113. ``request_timeout`` :
  114. Global timeout of the requests made to others engines in seconds. A bigger
  115. timeout will allow to wait for answers from slow engines, but in consequence
  116. will slow searx reactivity (the result page may take the time specified in the
  117. timeout to load). Can be override by :ref:`settings engine`
  118. ``useragent_suffix`` :
  119. Suffix to the user-agent searx uses to send requests to others engines. If an
  120. engine wish to block you, a contact info here may be useful to avoid that.
  121. ``keepalive_expiry``:
  122. Number of seconds to keep a connection in the pool. By default 5.0 seconds.
  123. .. _httpx proxies: https://www.python-httpx.org/advanced/#http-proxying
  124. ``proxies`` :
  125. Define one or more proxies you wish to use, see `httpx proxies`_.
  126. If there are more than one proxy for one protocol (http, https),
  127. requests to the engines are distributed in a round-robin fashion.
  128. ``source_ips`` :
  129. If you use multiple network interfaces, define from which IP the requests must
  130. be made. Example:
  131. * ``0.0.0.0`` any local IPv4 address.
  132. * ``::`` any local IPv6 address.
  133. * ``192.168.0.1``
  134. * ``[ 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2 ]`` these two specific IP addresses
  135. * ``fe80::60a2:1691:e5a2:ee1f``
  136. * ``fe80::60a2:1691:e5a2:ee1f/126`` all IP addresses in this network.
  137. * ``[ 192.168.0.1, fe80::/126 ]``
  138. ``retries`` :
  139. Number of retry in case of an HTTP error. On each retry, searx uses an
  140. different proxy and source ip.
  141. ``retry_on_http_error`` :
  142. Retry request on some HTTP status code.
  143. Example:
  144. * ``true`` : on HTTP status code between 400 and 599.
  145. * ``403`` : on HTTP status code 403.
  146. * ``[403, 429]``: on HTTP status code 403 and 429.
  147. ``enable_http2`` :
  148. Enable by default. Set to ``false`` to disable HTTP/2.
  149. ``max_redirects`` :
  150. 30 by default. Maximum redirect before it is an error.
  151. ``locales:``
  152. ------------
  153. .. code:: yaml
  154. locales:
  155. en: English
  156. de: Deutsch
  157. he: Hebrew
  158. hu: Magyar
  159. fr: Français
  160. es: Español
  161. it: Italiano
  162. nl: Nederlands
  163. ja: 日本語 (Japanese)
  164. tr: Türkçe
  165. ru: Russian
  166. ro: Romanian
  167. ``locales`` :
  168. Locales codes and their names. Available translations of searx interface.

  212. - socks5h://user:password@proxy4:1080
  213. ``name`` :
  214. Name that will be used across searx to define this engine. In settings, on
  215. the result page...
  216. ``engine`` :
  217. Name of the python file used to handle requests and responses to and from this
  218. search engine.
  219. ``shortcut`` :
  220. Code used to execute bang requests (in this case using ``!bi`` or ``?bi``)
  221. ``base_url`` : optional
  222. Part of the URL that should be stable across every request. Can be useful to
  223. use multiple sites using only one engine, or updating the site URL without
  224. touching at the code.
  225. ``categories`` : optional
  226. Define in which categories this engine will be active. Most of the time, it is
  227. defined in the code of the engine, but in a few cases it is useful, like when
  228. describing multiple search engine using the same code.
  229. ``timeout`` : optional
  230. Timeout of the search with the current search engine. **Be careful, it will
  231. modify the global timeout of searx.**
  232. ``api_key`` : optional
  233. In a few cases, using an API needs the use of a secret key. How to obtain them
  234. is described in the file.
  235. ``disabled`` : optional
  236. To disable by default the engine, but not deleting it. It will allow the user
  237. to manually activate it in the settings.
  238. ``language`` : optional
  239. If you want to use another language for a specific engine, you can define it
  240. by using the full ISO code of language and country, like ``fr_FR``, ``en_US``,
  241. ``de_DE``.
  242. ``tokens`` : optional
  243. A list of secret tokens to make this engine *private*, more details see
  244. :ref:`private engines`.
  245. ``weigth`` : default ``1``
  246. Weighting of the results of this engine.
  247. ``display_error_messages`` : default ``true``
  248. When an engine returns an error, the message is displayed on the user interface.
  249. ``network``: optional
  250. Use the network configuration from another engine.
  251. In addition, there are two default networks:
  252. * ``ipv4`` set ``local_addresses`` to ``0.0.0.0`` (use only IPv4 local addresses)
  253. * ``ipv6`` set ``local_addresses`` to ``::`` (use only IPv6 local addresses)
  254. .. note::
  255. A few more options are possible, but they are pretty specific to some
  256. engines, and so won't be described here.
  257. .. _settings use_default_settings:
  258. use_default_settings
  259. ====================
  260. .. sidebar:: ``use_default_settings: true``
  261. - :ref:`settings location`
  262. - :ref:`use_default_settings.yml`
  263. - :origin:`/etc/searx/settings.yml <utils/templates/etc/searx/use_default_settings.yml>`
  264. The user defined ``settings.yml`` is loaded from the :ref:`settings location`
  265. and can relied on the default configuration :origin:`searx/settings.yml` using:
  266. ``use_default_settings: true``
  267. ``server:``
  268. In the following example, the actual settings are the default settings defined
  269. in :origin:`searx/settings.yml` with the exception of the ``secret_key`` and
  270. the ``bind_address``:
  271. .. code-block:: yaml
  272. use_default_settings: true
  273. server:
  274. secret_key: "ultrasecretkey" # change this!
  275. bind_address: "0.0.0.0"
  276. ``engines:``
  277. With ``use_default_settings: true``, each settings can be override in a
  278. similar way, the ``engines`` section is merged according to the engine
  279. ``name``. In this example, searx will load all the engine and the arch linux
  280. wiki engine has a :ref:`token <private engines>`:
  281. .. code-block:: yaml
  282. use_default_settings: true
  283. server:
  284. secret_key: "ultrasecretkey" # change this!
  285. engines:
  286. - name: arch linux wiki
  287. tokens: ['$ecretValue']
  288. ``engines:`` / ``remove:``
  289. It is possible to remove some engines from the default settings. The following
  290. example is similar to the above one, but searx doesn't load the the google
  291. engine:
  292. .. code-block:: yaml
  293. use_default_settings:
  294. engines:
  295. remove:
  296. - google
  297. server:
  298. secret_key: "ultrasecretkey" # change this!
  299. engines:
  300. - name: arch linux wiki
  301. tokens: ['$ecretValue']
  302. ``engines:`` / ``keep_only:``
  303. As an alternative, it is possible to specify the engines to keep. In the
  304. following example, searx has only two engines:
  305. .. code-block:: yaml
  306. use_default_settings:
  307. engines:
  308. keep_only:
  309. - google
  310. - duckduckgo
  311. server:
  312. secret_key: "ultrasecretkey" # change this!
  313. engines:
  314. - name: google
  315. tokens: ['$ecretValue']
  316. - name: duckduckgo
  317. tokens: ['$ecretValue']
