  130. Referrer-Policy : no-referrer
  131. .. sidebar:: buildenv
  132. Changing a value tagged by :ref:`buildenv <make buildenv>`, needs to
  133. rebuild instance's environment :ref:`utils/brand.env <make buildenv>`.
  134. ``base_url`` : :ref:`buildenv SEARXNG_URL <make buildenv>`
  135. The base URL where SearXNG is deployed. Used to create correct inbound links.
  136. If you change the value, don't forget to rebuild instance's environment
  137. (:ref:`utils/brand.env <make buildenv>`)
  138. ``port`` & ``bind_address``: :ref:`buildenv SEARXNG_PORT & SEARXNG_BIND_ADDRESS <make buildenv>`

  141. Apache or Nginx.
  142. ``secret_key`` : ``$SEARXNG_SECRET``
  143. Used for cryptography purpose.
  144. ``limiter`` :
  145. Rate limit the number of request on the instance, block some bots. The
  146. :ref:`limiter plugin` requires a :ref:`settings redis` database.
  147. ``image_proxy`` :
  148. Allow your instance of SearXNG of being able to proxy images. Uses memory space.
  149. .. _HTTP headers: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Headers
  150. ``default_http_headers`` :

  159. default_theme: simple
  160. theme_args:
  161. simple_style: auto
  162. ``default_locale`` :
  163. SearXNG interface language. If blank, the locale is detected by using the
  164. browser language. If it doesn't work, or you are deploying a language
  165. specific instance of searx, a locale can be defined using an ISO language
  166. code, like ``fr``, ``en``, ``de``.
  167. ``default_theme`` :
  168. Name of the theme you want to use by default on your SearXNG instance.
  169. ``theme_args.simple_style``:
  170. Style of simple theme: ``auto``, ``light``, ``dark``
  171. ``query_in_title`` :
  172. When true, the result page's titles contains the query it decreases the
  173. privacy, since the browser can records the page titles.
  174. ``results_on_new_tab``:
  175. Open result links in a new tab by default.
  176. .. _settings redis:
  177. ``redis:``
  178. ----------
  179. .. _Redis.from_url(url): https://redis-py.readthedocs.io/en/stable/connections.html#redis.client.Redis.from_url
  180. A redis DB can be connected by an URL, in :py:obj:`searx.shared.redisdb` you
  181. will find a description to test your redis connection in SerXNG. When using
  182. sockets, don't forget to check the access rights on the socket::
  183. ls -la /usr/local/searxng-redis/run/redis.sock
  184. srwxrwx--- 1 searxng-redis searxng-redis ... /usr/local/searxng-redis/run/redis.sock
  185. In this example read/write access is given to the *searxng-redis* group. To get
  186. access rights to redis instance (the socket), your SearXNG (or even your
  187. developer) account needs to be added to the *searxng-redis* group.
  188. ``url``
  189. URL to connect redis database, see `Redis.from_url(url)`_ & :ref:`redis db`::
  190. redis://[[username]:[password]]@localhost:6379/0
  191. rediss://[[username]:[password]]@localhost:6379/0
  192. unix://[[username]:[password]]@/path/to/socket.sock?db=0
  193. .. admonition:: Tip for developers
  194. To set up a local redis instance using sockets simply use::
  195. $ ./manage redis.build
  196. $ sudo -H ./manage redis.install
  197. $ sudo -H ./manage redis.addgrp "${USER}"
  198. # don't forget to logout & login to get member of group
  199. The YAML setting for such a redis instance is:
  200. .. code:: yaml
  201. redis:
  202. url: unix:///usr/local/searxng-redis/run/redis.sock?db=0
  203. .. _settings outgoing:
  204. ``outgoing:``
  205. -------------
  206. Communication with search engines.
  207. .. code:: yaml
  208. outgoing:
  209. request_timeout: 2.0 # default timeout in seconds, can be override by engine
  210. max_request_timeout: 10.0 # the maximum timeout in seconds
  211. useragent_suffix: "" # informations like an email address to the administrator
  212. pool_connections: 100 # Maximum number of allowable connections, or null
  213. # for no limits. The default is 100.
  214. pool_maxsize: 10 # Number of allowable keep-alive connections, or null
  215. # to always allow. The default is 10.
  216. enable_http2: true # See https://www.python-httpx.org/http2/
  217. # uncomment below section if you want to use a proxy
  218. # proxies:
  219. # all://:
  220. # - http://proxy1:8080
  221. # - http://proxy2:8080
  222. # uncomment below section only if you have more than one network interface
  223. # which can be the source of outgoing search requests
  224. # source_ips:
  225. # - 1.1.1.1
  226. # - 1.1.1.2
  227. # - fe80::/126
  228. ``request_timeout`` :
  229. Global timeout of the requests made to others engines in seconds. A bigger
  230. timeout will allow to wait for answers from slow engines, but in consequence
  231. will slow SearXNG reactivity (the result page may take the time specified in the
  232. timeout to load). Can be override by :ref:`settings engine`
  233. ``useragent_suffix`` :
  234. Suffix to the user-agent SearXNG uses to send requests to others engines. If an
  235. engine wish to block you, a contact info here may be useful to avoid that.
  236. ``keepalive_expiry`` :
  237. Number of seconds to keep a connection in the pool. By default 5.0 seconds.
  238. .. _httpx proxies: https://www.python-httpx.org/advanced/#http-proxying
  239. ``proxies`` :
  240. Define one or more proxies you wish to use, see `httpx proxies`_.
  241. If there are more than one proxy for one protocol (http, https),
  242. requests to the engines are distributed in a round-robin fashion.
  243. ``source_ips`` :
  244. If you use multiple network interfaces, define from which IP the requests must
  245. be made. Example:
  246. * ``0.0.0.0`` any local IPv4 address.
  247. * ``::`` any local IPv6 address.
  248. * ``192.168.0.1``
  249. * ``[ 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2 ]`` these two specific IP addresses
  250. * ``fe80::60a2:1691:e5a2:ee1f``
  251. * ``fe80::60a2:1691:e5a2:ee1f/126`` all IP addresses in this network.
  252. * ``[ 192.168.0.1, fe80::/126 ]``
  253. ``retries`` :
  254. Number of retry in case of an HTTP error. On each retry, SearXNG uses an
  255. different proxy and source ip.
  256. ``retry_on_http_error`` :
  257. Retry request on some HTTP status code.
  258. Example:
  259. * ``true`` : on HTTP status code between 400 and 599.
  260. * ``403`` : on HTTP status code 403.
  261. * ``[403, 429]``: on HTTP status code 403 and 429.
  262. ``enable_http2`` :
  263. Enable by default. Set to ``false`` to disable HTTP/2.
  264. ``max_redirects`` :
  265. 30 by default. Maximum redirect before it is an error.
  266. ``categories_as_tabs:``
  267. -----------------------
  268. A list of the categories that are displayed as tabs in the user interface.
  269. Categories not listed here can still be searched with the :ref:`search-syntax`.

  326. ``name`` :
  327. Name that will be used across SearXNG to define this engine. In settings, on
  328. the result page...
  329. ``engine`` :
  330. Name of the python file used to handle requests and responses to and from this
  331. search engine.
  332. ``shortcut`` :
  333. Code used to execute bang requests (in this case using ``!bi``)
  334. ``base_url`` : optional
  335. Part of the URL that should be stable across every request. Can be useful to
  336. use multiple sites using only one engine, or updating the site URL without
  337. touching at the code.
  338. ``categories`` : optional
  339. Define in which categories this engine will be active. Most of the time, it is
  340. defined in the code of the engine, but in a few cases it is useful, like when
  341. describing multiple search engine using the same code.
  342. ``timeout`` : optional
  343. Timeout of the search with the current search engine. **Be careful, it will
  344. modify the global timeout of SearXNG.**
  345. ``api_key`` : optional
  346. In a few cases, using an API needs the use of a secret key. How to obtain them
  347. is described in the file.
  348. ``disabled`` : optional
  349. To disable by default the engine, but not deleting it. It will allow the user
  350. to manually activate it in the settings.
  351. ``language`` : optional
  352. If you want to use another language for a specific engine, you can define it
  353. by using the full ISO code of language and country, like ``fr_FR``, ``en_US``,
  354. ``de_DE``.
  355. ``tokens`` : optional
  356. A list of secret tokens to make this engine *private*, more details see
  357. :ref:`private engines`.
  358. ``weigth`` : default ``1``
  359. Weighting of the results of this engine.
  360. ``display_error_messages`` : default ``true``
  361. When an engine returns an error, the message is displayed on the user interface.
  362. ``network`` : optional
  363. Use the network configuration from another engine.
  364. In addition, there are two default networks:
  365. - ``ipv4`` set ``local_addresses`` to ``0.0.0.0`` (use only IPv4 local addresses)
  366. - ``ipv6`` set ``local_addresses`` to ``::`` (use only IPv6 local addresses)
  367. .. note::
  368. A few more options are possible, but they are pretty specific to some
  369. engines, and so won't be described here.
  370. Example: Multilingual Search
  371. ----------------------------
  372. SearXNG does not support true multilingual search. You have to use the language
  373. prefix in your search query when searching in a different language.
  374. But there is a workaround: By adding a new search engine with a different
  375. language, SearXNG will search in your default and other language.
  376. Example configuration in settings.yml for a German and English speaker:
  377. .. code-block:: yaml
  378. search:
  379. default_lang : "de"
  380. ...
  381. engines:
  382. - name : google english
  383. engine : google
  384. language : en
  385. ...
  386. When searching, the default google engine will return German results and
  387. "google english" will return English results.
  388. .. _settings use_default_settings:
  389. use_default_settings
  390. ====================
  391. .. sidebar:: ``use_default_settings: true``
  392. - :ref:`settings location`
  393. - :ref:`use_default_settings.yml`
  394. - :origin:`/etc/searxng/settings.yml <utils/templates/etc/searxng/settings.yml>`
  395. The user defined ``settings.yml`` is loaded from the :ref:`settings location`
  396. and can relied on the default configuration :origin:`searx/settings.yml` using:
  397. ``use_default_settings: true``
  398. ``server:``
  399. In the following example, the actual settings are the default settings defined
  400. in :origin:`searx/settings.yml` with the exception of the ``secret_key`` and
  401. the ``bind_address``:
  402. .. code-block:: yaml
  403. use_default_settings: true
  404. server:
  405. secret_key: "ultrasecretkey" # change this!
  406. bind_address: "0.0.0.0"
  407. ``engines:``
  408. With ``use_default_settings: true``, each settings can be override in a
  409. similar way, the ``engines`` section is merged according to the engine
  410. ``name``. In this example, SearXNG will load all the engine and the arch linux
  411. wiki engine has a :ref:`token <private engines>`:
  412. .. code-block:: yaml
  413. use_default_settings: true
  414. server:
  415. secret_key: "ultrasecretkey" # change this!
  416. engines:
  417. - name: arch linux wiki
  418. tokens: ['$ecretValue']
  419. ``engines:`` / ``remove:``
  420. It is possible to remove some engines from the default settings. The following
  421. example is similar to the above one, but SearXNG doesn't load the the google
  422. engine:
  423. .. code-block:: yaml
  424. use_default_settings:
  425. engines:
  426. remove:
  427. - google
  428. server:
  429. secret_key: "ultrasecretkey" # change this!
  430. engines:
  431. - name: arch linux wiki
  432. tokens: ['$ecretValue']
  433. ``engines:`` / ``keep_only:``
  434. As an alternative, it is possible to specify the engines to keep. In the
  435. following example, SearXNG has only two engines:
  436. .. code-block:: yaml
  437. use_default_settings:
  438. engines:
  439. keep_only:
  440. - google
  441. - duckduckgo
  442. server:
  443. secret_key: "ultrasecretkey" # change this!
  444. engines:
  445. - name: google
  446. tokens: ['$ecretValue']
  447. - name: duckduckgo
  448. tokens: ['$ecretValue']
